Born and raised in Los Angeles, Madeline Hollander is a New York-based artist working across choreography, video, and drawing. A classically trained dancer, much of Hollander’s work melds her early experiences with ballet with a rigorous, research-based, and often site-responsive approach to performance. Her works explore how human movement and body-language might be brought to bear on questions of technology, agency, possession, and notions of personal and collective responsibility. Palindrome Dance is an example of Hollander’s meticulous system of hand-recorded choreographic notations and movement scores for her performance works. The performance that this edition indexesPalindrome, was presented by Hollander at JOAN’s Fall Celebration on November 15, 2018. Proceeds from this edition go directly to support Hollander’s new, site-specific performance series, Red Shoes, as part of the exhibition Spine: Madeline Hollander, Eva LeWittRagen Moss at JOAN.

Hollander received her BA from Barnard College in 2008 and her MFA from Bard College in 2018. Recent exhibitions and performances include New Max, Artist Institute, New York (2018), Closeup, 2nd Studio for Propositional Cinema Film Festival, Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover, Germany (2017), CompetitionBortolami Gallery, New York (2017),  stndrdththth , Socrates Sculpture ParkLong Island CityNY (2017), and Gesture Archive: BASE, Human Resources, Los Angeles, CA (2013), among many others.
