Join us on July 20th from 4-7pm for a Chinese gongfu tea service, offered by Shanhuan Manton, to mark the closing of Sofía Córdova’s exhibition, The Wreck and not the Story of the Wreck.
Shanhuan Manton is a filmmaker whose practice realizes communal storytelling as transformative cultural practice. Working interdisciplinarily, Manton’s work branches from cinema into other containers for facilitating experiences and collective study. Manton’s tea offering serves as one of those containers.
The Wreck and not the Story of the Wreck features two of Córdova’s video works along with a newly commissioned installation with sculptural and text-based works. Córdova makes work that looks to science fiction as alternative history and considers climate capitalism’s deep entanglement with colonial erasure.
We hope to engage JOAN’s surrounding community in honoring Córdova’s presentation of collectivity and imaginings through one of Manton’s regenerative rituals.
